The SC connector was the dominant fiber optic connector of the 1990s and 2000s, and it remains widely deployed in telecom outside plant, CATV, and PON networks today. While LC has taken over in data centers, SC holds its ground wherever its larger ferrule and snap-in mechanism offer practical advantages.

This guide covers SC connector specs, the critical difference between SC/APC and SC/UPC, and where SC is still the right choice.
What Is an SC Connector?
SC stands for Subscriber Connector (also called Standard Connector or Square Connector). Developed by NTT in Japan in the late 1980s, it became one of the first widely standardized fiber connectors.
Key features:
- 2.5 mm zirconia ceramic ferrule — the same diameter as FC and ST connectors
- Push-pull snap-in latch — no rotation required (unlike FC's threaded coupling)
- Square housing — distinctive rectangular profile
- Available in simplex and duplex — duplex uses a clip to join two simplex connectors
- Color-coded: Blue (SC/UPC), Green (SC/APC), Beige/Black (multimode)
SC connectors are standardized under IEC 61754-4 and TIA-604-3 (FOCIS-3).
SC/UPC vs SC/APC: The Critical Difference
This is the most important distinction when specifying SC connectors.
SC/UPC (Ultra Physical Contact)
- End-face angle: 0° (flat, slightly convex dome)
- Return loss: ≥50 dB (typical ≥55 dB)
- Insertion loss: ≤0.3 dB
- Housing color: Blue
- Use: Datacom, LAN, general single-mode applications
SC/APC (Angled Physical Contact)
- End-face angle: 8° (angled)
- Return loss: ≥60 dB (typical ≥65 dB)
- Insertion loss: ≤0.3 dB
- Housing color: Green
- Use: GPON/XGS-PON, CATV, analog RF, FTTx outside plant
The 8° angled end-face on APC connectors reflects back-reflections away from the fiber core at an angle, preventing them from traveling back up the fiber. This is critical for:
- GPON/XGS-PON: OLT lasers are highly sensitive to back-reflections; SC/APC is mandatory
- CATV/HFC: Analog video signals are distorted by reflections
- Coherent systems: High return loss required for laser stability
Never mate SC/UPC with SC/APC — the 8° angle mismatch causes high insertion loss (typically 3–5 dB) and can damage the ferrule end-face.

SC vs LC: When to Use Each
| Factor | SC | LC |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrule diameter | 2.5 mm | 1.25 mm |
| Port density | Lower | Higher (2× SC) |
| Connector size | Larger | Smaller |
| Latch | Push-pull snap | Push-pull latch |
| SFP compatibility | No (requires adapter) | Yes (native) |
| PON/CATV use | Common (SC/APC) | Less common |
| Outside plant | Common | Less common |
| Cost | Similar | Similar |
Use SC when:
- Deploying GPON/XGS-PON (SC/APC is the standard ONT interface)
- Working with CATV/HFC infrastructure
- Connecting to legacy equipment with SC ports
- Outside plant terminations where the larger connector is easier to handle
Use LC when:
- Connecting SFP/SFP+/SFP28 transceivers
- Building high-density patch panels
- New data center or enterprise LAN deployments
SC in PON Networks (GPON/XGS-PON)
SC/APC is the standard connector for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployments worldwide. The typical PON architecture uses:
- OLT (Central Office): SC/APC patch panel
- Feeder fiber: SC/APC splices and connectors
- Optical splitter: SC/APC ports (1:32 or 1:64)
- Drop cable: SC/APC at both ends
- ONT/ONU (Customer Premises): SC/APC input port
The entire PON chain uses SC/APC to maintain the ≥60 dB return loss required for stable OLT laser operation. Mixing in SC/UPC connectors anywhere in the chain degrades performance.
SC Duplex Connectors
SC duplex connectors join two SC simplex connectors with a plastic clip. The clip maintains the correct spacing for duplex adapters and patch panels.
- Standard duplex spacing: 12.7 mm center-to-center
- The clip can be removed to use as two simplex connectors
- Duplex SC is used for bidirectional datacom links (one fiber TX, one RX)
SC Pigtails and Patch Cables
SC Pigtail
- One end: SC connector (factory-terminated)
- Other end: Bare fiber (for fusion splicing)
- Available in SC/UPC and SC/APC, SM and MM
- Used in splice trays and distribution frames
SC Patch Cable
- Both ends: SC connectors
- Available: SC-SC, SC-LC, SC-ST, SC-FC
- Lengths: 0.5 m to 30 m standard
- Critical: Match polish type at both ends (UPC-UPC or APC-APC)
SC/APC to SC/UPC Patch Cable
These exist but should only be used when intentionally transitioning between systems. The APC end will have ≥60 dB return loss; the UPC end ≥50 dB. The overall link return loss is limited by the UPC end.
Cleaning SC Connectors
SC's 2.5 mm ferrule is easier to clean than LC's 1.25 mm ferrule, but contamination is still the primary cause of link failures.
Best practices:
- Inspect before mating — use a fiber scope (200–400× magnification)
- Use SC-compatible cleaning tools — reel cleaners or swabs
- Clean the adapter — adapters accumulate contamination from both sides
- Cap unused connectors — always use dust caps
- Inspect after cleaning — verify cleanliness before connecting
For SC/APC, be careful not to damage the angled end-face during cleaning. Use gentle pressure with appropriate cleaning tools.
Summary
The SC connector remains essential for PON, CATV, and telecom outside plant applications. Its 2.5 mm ferrule and snap-in mechanism are reliable and well-understood after decades of deployment.
Key points:
- SC/APC (green) is mandatory for GPON/XGS-PON and CATV — never substitute SC/UPC
- SC/UPC (blue) for general datacom and legacy equipment
- SC offers lower port density than LC — use LC for new high-density deployments
- Never mate SC/APC with SC/UPC — the 8° mismatch causes high loss and potential damage
- SC/APC is the global standard for FTTH/FTTP ONT interfaces
