SFP modules (Small Form-factor Pluggable) are the standard interface for connecting fiber optic or copper cables to network switches, routers, and servers. With hundreds of variants available, choosing the right module requires understanding speed, reach, fiber type, and compatibility.

This guide covers everything you need to know to buy the right SFP module.
SFP vs SFP+ vs SFP28: Which Speed Do You Need?
| Module | Speed | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| SFP | 1 Gbps | Access switches, legacy equipment, GbE uplinks |
| SFP+ | 10 Gbps | Core/distribution switches, server NICs, 10GbE |
| SFP28 | 25 Gbps | Modern server connections, 25GbE ToR switches |
SFP+ ports are backward compatible — they accept SFP (1G) modules at reduced speed. SFP28 ports accept SFP+ (10G) and SFP (1G) modules.
If you're buying for a 10GbE switch, you need SFP+ modules. If your switch has SFP28 ports, you can use SFP28 (25G), SFP+ (10G), or SFP (1G) modules.
Fiber Type: Single-Mode vs Multimode
Multimode SFP (Short Reach)
Multimode modules use 850 nm VCSELs and work with OM1, OM2, OM3, or OM4 multimode fiber.
| Module | Fiber | Max Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1000BASE-SX (SFP) | OM2 | 550 m |
| 1000BASE-SX (SFP) | OM3 | 550 m |
| 10GBASE-SR (SFP+) | OM3 | 300 m |
| 10GBASE-SR (SFP+) | OM4 | 400 m |
| 25GBASE-SR (SFP28) | OM4 | 100 m |
Multimode modules are less expensive and suitable for intra-building or campus connections.
Single-Mode SFP (Long Reach)
Single-mode modules use 1310 nm or 1550 nm lasers and work with OS1/OS2 single-mode fiber.
| Module | Wavelength | Max Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1000BASE-LX (SFP) | 1310 nm | 10 km |
| 1000BASE-ZX (SFP) | 1550 nm | 80 km |
| 10GBASE-LR (SFP+) | 1310 nm | 10 km |
| 10GBASE-ER (SFP+) | 1550 nm | 40 km |
| 10GBASE-ZR (SFP+) | 1550 nm | 80 km |
| 25GBASE-LR (SFP28) | 1310 nm | 10 km |
Single-mode modules are more expensive but support much longer distances.

Copper SFP (RJ45)
Copper SFP modules use an RJ45 connector instead of fiber. They're useful when you need to connect copper Ethernet to an SFP port.
| Module | Speed | Max Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1000BASE-T (SFP) | 1 Gbps | 100 m |
| 10GBASE-T (SFP+) | 10 Gbps | 30 m |
Note: 10GBASE-T SFP+ modules consume significantly more power (1.5–2 W) than fiber SFP+ modules (0.5–1 W) and generate more heat.
BIDI (Bidirectional) SFP
BIDI modules use a single fiber strand for both transmit and receive, using different wavelengths for each direction (WDM). They come in pairs:
- TX 1310 nm / RX 1550 nm (one module)
- TX 1550 nm / RX 1310 nm (paired module)
BIDI modules cut fiber costs in half for point-to-point links. They must be used in matched pairs.
DWDM SFP
DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) modules transmit on specific ITU-T wavelengths (C-band, 100 GHz or 50 GHz spacing). Multiple DWDM channels can share a single fiber pair using a DWDM mux/demux.
Used in metro and long-haul networks where fiber capacity is limited.
Compatibility: Will It Work in My Switch?
Vendor Lock-in
Some vendors (Cisco, Juniper, HPE, etc.) program their equipment to check for vendor-specific coding in the SFP EEPROM. If the module doesn't pass the check, the port may be disabled or show a warning.
Workarounds:
- Cisco:
service unsupported-transceivercommand disables the check on most platforms - Juniper: Third-party modules generally work without issues
- HPE/Aruba: Most platforms accept third-party modules
Third-Party vs OEM Modules
| Factor | OEM Module | Third-Party Module |
|---|---|---|
| Price | High ($50–$500+) | Low ($10–$100) |
| Compatibility | Guaranteed | Usually works |
| Warranty | Vendor warranty | Supplier warranty |
| Support | Vendor support | Supplier support |
| Quality | Consistent | Varies by supplier |
Third-party modules from reputable suppliers use the same optical components as OEM modules and meet the same IEEE standards. For most applications, they're a cost-effective choice.
Key Specs to Check Before Buying
- Speed: SFP (1G), SFP+ (10G), or SFP28 (25G)
- Fiber type: Multimode (OM3/OM4) or single-mode (OS2)
- Distance: Match to your cable run length
- Connector type: LC duplex (most common), SC, or MPO
- Wavelength: 850 nm (SR), 1310 nm (LR), 1550 nm (ER/ZR)
- Switch compatibility: Check the switch vendor's compatibility list
- DOM support: Digital Optical Monitoring — allows monitoring of TX power, RX power, temperature, and voltage
Common SFP Module Part Numbers
| Application | Cisco | Generic |
|---|---|---|
| 1G multimode | GLC-SX-MMD | SFP-1G-SX |
| 1G single-mode 10km | GLC-LH-SMD | SFP-1G-LX |
| 10G multimode | SFP-10G-SR | SFP+-10G-SR |
| 10G single-mode 10km | SFP-10G-LR | SFP+-10G-LR |
| 10G copper | SFP-10G-T | SFP+-10G-T |
Summary
Choosing the right SFP module comes down to four key decisions:
- Speed: Match to your switch port (SFP/SFP+/SFP28)
- Fiber type: Multimode for short reach, single-mode for long reach
- Distance: Choose SR/LR/ER/ZR based on cable run length
- Compatibility: Verify with your switch vendor or use a compatible third-party module
