A first-article inspection report needs an index that connects every required characteristic to its measurement or supporting record. A folder full of reports is not enough if the buyer cannot tell which drawing feature each result addresses. Begin with a controlled drawing and build the evidence map around the actual first-article construction.

Establish the inspection boundary
Record the part, drawing revision, manufacturing source and specimen identities. Define whether the first article covers one component, a connector assembly or a finished harness. Include the production-intent process and identify any sample features made by a different temporary method.
IAQG's 9102 first-article information describes standardized FAI documentation, primarily for aviation, space and defense supply chains. Use a contractually required standard and revision where applicable. The practical index below is general buyer guidance, not a claim that it satisfies a formal 9102 submission.
Link characteristics to evidence
Assign unique identifiers to dimensions and other required drawing characteristics. Keep the identifier visible in the inspection record. For a measured dimension, include the actual result and applicable limit rather than only an overall pass statement.
Non-dimensional requirements need their own evidence links. Material, finish, appearance and functional requirements may be supported by different documents or test methods. State which specimen and lot each document covers.
A first-article report index
| Index group | Records to link |
|---|---|
| Part identity | Order, sample IDs and controlled drawing |
| Dimensional characteristics | Feature identifiers, limits and actual results |
| Materials and finish | BOM mapping and applicable supporting records |
| Visual condition | Defined criteria and relevant photographs |
| Function | Test boundary, method and result |
| Deviations | Description, disposition and approval scope |
| Review | Responsible person, date and release decision |
Add instrument identity, calibration reference and measurement method where required. If a characteristic cannot be measured directly, agree the alternative evidence before reporting it as accepted.

Review the report against the actual assembly
For an RJ45 proposal, CZT's integrated-magnetics connector family includes the catalog identifier JBG110710105. The name does not establish a first-article result. The inspection index must refer to the actual supplied construction and its confirmed drawing.
A useful review starts with one drawing feature and follows it to the measurement, specimen and disposition, then reverses that path from a report result to the drawing. Missing links become visible quickly.
Review notes and general drawing requirements alongside numbered dimensions. A dimensionally complete report can still omit a finish, marking or assembly requirement that is expressed only in a drawing note.
Record deviations without rewriting the requirement to match the sample. If an authorized concession permits a specific use, retain its scope and affected quantities. When the design or process changes, assess the effect on first-article evidence instead of reusing the old index unchanged. This keeps the report usable for both initial approval and later comparison with production parts.
Connect this review to CZT product information
Examples for applying this worksheet are listed below. Use the identifiers to request the current drawing and confirm the configuration required by your application.
| Catalog reference | Product information | Drawing record | Reference inquiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| QWY-1062-7 | 4001 Series 8-position modular socket, QWY-1062-7 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
| QWY-1013-10 | 8P8C modular plug, QWY-1013-10 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
A catalog drawing reference is a starting document, not a substitute for reviewing its revision, options and suitability for the complete assembly.

Discuss a drawing, sample or quotation
Share the part or family reference, current drawing revision, operating conditions and quantities. Include the specific checks described in this article so the inquiry identifies both the component and the evidence needed for your decision. Confirm sample availability and the proposed scope with the supplier.
