Second-source connector qualification should progress through defined stages that reduce uncertainty before volume purchasing. A second supplier's similar catalog item is a candidate, not an approved substitute. The review must cover the exact component, its manufacturing route and the equipment configuration in which it will be used.
For a project evaluating the RJ45 integrated-magnetics family, begin with the approved interface and circuit requirements. The method below also applies to other families, but each technical review needs its own actual drawings and validation plan.

Stage one: establish the documented differences
Collect the current and proposed drawings, orderable codes and relevant application information. Compare mechanical interfaces, electrical definitions, materials and manufacturing requirements. Mark uncertain items separately from confirmed matches.
Identify whether the alternate requires a PCB, tooling or assembly change. A component that could work after redesign may be a valid development option, but it is different from an interchangeable purchasing alternative for existing stock.
Review available quality and product documents according to the project's requirements. A corporate quality certificate does not establish the selected connector's performance in the equipment.
Stage two: qualify the relevant samples
Define the sample configuration and acceptance criteria before testing. Select checks based on the differences and the product's critical functions. Use production-intent materials and identify departures from the planned manufacturing route.
| Stage | Evidence needed before proceeding |
|---|---|
| Document screening | Resolved requirements and difference review |
| Component samples | Identified models and agreed sample results |
| Installed evaluation | Relevant board, enclosure and system evidence |
| Production trial | Process, inspection and traceability records |
| Source release | Authorized decision and stocking conditions |
A passing fit check does not close an electrical requirement. Likewise, a successful bench function does not resolve an untested production-process difference.
Stage three: examine production readiness
Review how the alternative will be made, inspected, labeled and traced. Verify the test and inspection records needed by the customer. Confirm sample and production tooling differences rather than assuming the evaluated sample represents every later shipment.
For a hypothetical network device, an alternate may work on a revised board but need a different test fixture and receiving label. Those changes belong in the qualification package before the procurement system permits mixed source ordering.
Consider supply planning and approved commercial terms separately from technical acceptance. Neither a low quotation nor an urgent shortage should silently replace the required design decision.

Release a precise source option
Record the full supplier code, drawing revision, approved implementation and any requirement to keep stock separately identified. Obtain the customer's or design owner's approval where the actual project requires it.
Define how future changes will be reviewed and who maintains the approved-source record. The completed qualification should explain why the candidate is suitable within a known boundary. It should not assert that all similarly named connector products from the two suppliers are interchangeable across other applications.
Connect this review to CZT product information
Examples for applying this worksheet are listed below. Use the identifiers to request the current drawing and confirm the configuration required by your application.
| Catalog reference | Product information | Drawing record | Reference inquiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| QWY-1062-7 | 4001 Series 8-position modular socket, QWY-1062-7 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
| QWY-1013-10 | 8P8C modular plug, QWY-1013-10 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
A catalog drawing reference is a starting document, not a substitute for reviewing its revision, options and suitability for the complete assembly.

Discuss a drawing, sample or quotation
Share the part or family reference, current drawing revision, operating conditions and quantities. Include the specific checks described in this article so the inquiry identifies both the component and the evidence needed for your decision. Confirm sample availability and the proposed scope with the supplier.
