An approved connector sample should have a defined identity and purpose. A golden sample is useful as a reference only when reviewers know which features it represents, which revision it belongs to and whether its condition remains suitable. It should not become an undocumented substitute for the drawing and specification.
For a sample selected from the RJ45 integrated-magnetics family, record the exact model and supporting documents. A loose component may help compare external geometry, but it cannot demonstrate every internal connection, material or performance requirement by visual inspection.

Separate the reference purposes
Identify whether the retained item illustrates appearance, assembly position, a permitted defect boundary or a qualified functional configuration. Those purposes may require different samples and different storage conditions.
An appearance limit sample should state the specific feature and observation method it represents. A functional sample needs its test history and configuration identified. Neither should silently establish an acceptance criterion for unrelated characteristics.
Where a physical feature is difficult to preserve, consider whether controlled photographs, dimensions or another documented reference should accompany the sample. The approved specification remains the source of the actual requirement.
Label and register each reference
Assign a sample identifier and link it to the part number, drawing revision, approval date and authority. Record its purpose, limitations and location in a register that inspectors can access.
| Register field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sample identity | Distinguishes the actual approved item |
| Applicable revision | Prevents use for an obsolete design |
| Represented feature | Limits the comparison to its purpose |
| Storage condition | Helps preserve the relevant characteristics |
| Review status | Shows whether the reference remains approved |
Do not rely on an unmarked sample kept in a desk drawer. Its history and relationship to the current product may be impossible to reconstruct.
Protect the reference from unintended change
Define access, handling and periodic condition review according to its purpose. Repeated mating or probing can change a functional reference, while handling or exposure can alter an appearance sample.
For a hypothetical receiving-inspection station, a retained connector may acquire a scratch during daily use. If inspectors begin accepting that scratch as part of the original limit, the reference has drifted. Investigate its condition and replace or reapprove it through the defined process.
Keep superseded references separate from current ones. Historical samples can help investigate a change, but their status should be unmistakable.

Verify tests independently of the sample
If a retained assembly is used to create a test program, check the program against the approved engineering definition. Cirris explains this limitation in its test-program verification guidance: a sample assumed correct still needs independent verification.
Release the sample register and comparison instructions with the applicable inspection plan. This gives engineering and purchasing a controlled reference while preventing a single physical piece from being treated as permanent proof of requirements that it cannot visibly or measurably establish.
Connect this review to CZT product information
Examples for applying this worksheet are listed below. Use the identifiers to request the current drawing and confirm the configuration required by your application.
| Catalog reference | Product information | Drawing record | Reference inquiry |
|---|---|---|---|
| QWY-1062-7 | 4001 Series 8-position modular socket, QWY-1062-7 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
| QWY-1013-10 | 8P8C modular plug, QWY-1013-10 | Listed PDF | Ask about this reference |
A catalog drawing reference is a starting document, not a substitute for reviewing its revision, options and suitability for the complete assembly.

Discuss a drawing, sample or quotation
Share the part or family reference, current drawing revision, operating conditions and quantities. Include the specific checks described in this article so the inquiry identifies both the component and the evidence needed for your decision. Confirm sample availability and the proposed scope with the supplier.
