The solar industry has largely standardized on the MC4 connector form factor, but "MC4" is not a single product — it's a connector shape that dozens of manufacturers produce to varying quality levels. Understanding the different PV connector types, their specifications, and critically, which ones are compatible with each other, prevents dangerous mismatches in solar installations.

What Is a PV Connector?
A PV (photovoltaic) connector is a weatherproof electrical connector designed specifically for solar panel installations. Key requirements:
- IP67 or IP68 rated: Dust-tight and waterproof
- UV resistant: Withstands years of direct sunlight
- High temperature rated: Typically −40°C to +85°C or +90°C
- Locking mechanism: Prevents accidental disconnection
- Rated for DC voltage: Solar strings can reach 600–1,500 V DC
- Rated for DC current: Typically 30 A for residential, higher for commercial
MC4 Connectors
MC4 stands for Multi-Contact 4mm — named after the original manufacturer (Multi-Contact, now Stäubli) and the 4 mm contact pin diameter.
MC4 is the dominant PV connector worldwide. The original MC4 was developed by Multi-Contact (Switzerland) and became the de facto industry standard. Today, dozens of manufacturers produce MC4-compatible connectors.
Original Stäubli MC4 (Multi-Contact)
- The original and reference design
- Highest quality and reliability
- IEC 62852 certified
- Used in utility-scale and premium residential installations
- Higher cost than generic alternatives
Generic MC4-Compatible Connectors
Hundreds of manufacturers produce connectors that physically mate with Stäubli MC4 but are not made by Stäubli. Quality varies enormously.
Key concern: While generic MC4 connectors may physically mate with Stäubli MC4, mixing brands is not recommended and may violate installation standards (IEC 62548, NEC 690.33).
Reasons to avoid mixing brands:
- Different contact geometries can cause high resistance connections
- Different locking mechanisms may not engage properly
- Thermal cycling can cause differential expansion and loosening
- Warranty and certification issues
Amphenol H4 Connector
The Amphenol H4 (also called Helios H4) is the main alternative to MC4 in the market.
Specifications:
- Contact diameter: 4 mm (same as MC4)
- Voltage rating: 1,500 V DC
- Current rating: 30 A
- IP rating: IP68
- Temperature: −40°C to +85°C
- Certifications: IEC 62852, UL 6703
Compatibility with MC4: Amphenol H4 and Stäubli MC4 are not intermateable — they look similar but have different locking mechanisms and contact geometries. Forcing them together creates a dangerous connection.
Amphenol H4 is widely used in North America and is the preferred alternative to MC4 for many installers.
Stäubli MC4-EVO
The next-generation MC4 from Stäubli, designed for 1,500 V systems and improved safety.
Improvements over original MC4:
- Higher voltage rating (1,500 V vs 1,000 V for original)
- Improved locking mechanism — requires a tool to disconnect
- Better UV resistance
- Backward compatible with original MC4 (mates with original MC4)
MC4 Multi-Contact Variants
MC4 T-Branch Connector
Connects three cables in a T configuration — used to parallel two strings into one cable run.
MC4 Y-Branch Connector
Connects four cables — two inputs to one output (or one input to two outputs).
MC4 Extension Cable
Pre-assembled cable with MC4 connectors on both ends. Available in various lengths for extending panel connections.
MC4 End Cap
Seals an unused MC4 connector to maintain IP67 rating.
XT60 Connectors
XT60 connectors are used in off-grid and battery storage applications, not typically in grid-tied solar panel strings.
Specifications:
- Current rating: 60 A continuous
- Voltage rating: 500 V
- IP rating: Not rated (not weatherproof)
- Use: Battery connections, charge controllers, portable solar
XT60 is common in RC vehicles, portable power stations, and DIY off-grid systems. Not suitable for outdoor solar panel connections.
Anderson Powerpole
Anderson Powerpole connectors are used in some off-grid and amateur radio applications for 12V/24V battery connections.
- Current ratings: 15 A, 30 A, 45 A, 75 A
- Voltage: Up to 600 V
- Genderless design — any two connectors mate together
- Not weatherproof (IP rating not specified)
Not suitable for outdoor solar panel connections — use MC4 for panel-to-panel connections.
PV Connector Compatibility Matrix
| Connector | Mates With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stäubli MC4 | Stäubli MC4, MC4-EVO | Reference standard |
| Generic MC4 | Generic MC4 (same brand) | Do not mix brands |
| Amphenol H4 | Amphenol H4 only | Not MC4 compatible |
| Stäubli MC4-EVO | MC4-EVO, original MC4 | Backward compatible |
| XT60 | XT60 only | Not for outdoor solar |
| Anderson Powerpole | Anderson Powerpole | Not for outdoor solar |
Critical rule: Never mix MC4 connectors from different manufacturers in a solar installation. Use the same brand throughout.
Choosing PV Connectors
For Grid-Tied Residential Solar
- Use Stäubli MC4 or Amphenol H4 — both are IEC 62852 certified
- Choose one brand and use it consistently throughout the installation
- Verify compatibility with your inverter's connector type
For Utility-Scale Solar
- Stäubli MC4 is the industry standard
- IEC 62852 certification is typically required
- Specify connector brand in the design documents
For Off-Grid / DIY Systems
- MC4 for panel-to-panel connections
- XT60 or Anderson Powerpole for battery connections
- Ensure IP67 rating for any outdoor connections
IEC 62852: The PV Connector Standard
IEC 62852 defines requirements for PV connectors:
- Electrical ratings (voltage, current)
- Mechanical requirements (mating force, retention force)
- Environmental requirements (IP rating, UV resistance, temperature)
- Safety requirements (touch protection, locking)
Connectors certified to IEC 62852 have been tested to these requirements. Always specify IEC 62852 certified connectors for grid-tied installations.
Summary
The PV connector market is dominated by MC4-form-factor connectors, but "MC4" covers a wide range of quality levels. Key points:
- Stäubli MC4 is the original and highest-quality option
- Amphenol H4 is a quality alternative — but not MC4 compatible
- Generic MC4 varies in quality — use IEC 62852 certified products only
- Never mix brands — different MC4 manufacturers are not intermateable
- XT60 and Anderson Powerpole are for battery connections, not outdoor solar panels
- Specify IEC 62852 certification for all grid-tied installations
