The solar PV industry has converged on a single connector form factor — the MC4 — but "MC4" is not a single product. It is a connector shape that has been implemented by dozens of manufacturers, with varying levels of quality, performance, and cross-compatibility. Understanding the differences between MC4 variants, and the rules for mixing connectors from different manufacturers, is essential for safe and reliable solar installations.
This guide covers the major solar connector types, their specifications, and the compatibility rules that govern how they can be combined.

The MC4 Connector: Origin and Specification
The MC4 connector was developed by Multi-Contact (now Stäubli Electrical Connectors) in the 1990s. The name stands for Multi-Contact, 4mm — referring to the 4mm contact pin diameter. Multi-Contact's original MC4 design became the de facto standard for solar PV string wiring worldwide.
The MC4 connector is defined by IEC 62852, which specifies:
- Contact pin diameter: 4mm
- Voltage rating: 1,500V DC (IEC 62852 Class II)
- Current rating: 30A continuous
- IP rating: IP67 (mated), IP2X (unmated)
- Operating temperature: -40°C to +90°C
- UV resistance: Required (outdoor use)
- Mating cycles: 100 minimum
The IEC 62852 standard defines the performance requirements but does not specify the exact mechanical dimensions of the connector housing. This is why connectors from different manufacturers can look similar but may not be safely intermateable.
Major MC4 Connector Manufacturers
Stäubli (Original MC4)
Stäubli (formerly Multi-Contact) manufactures the original MC4 connector. Stäubli MC4 connectors are the reference design and are widely considered the highest quality option. They are used in premium residential, commercial, and utility-scale installations.
Stäubli also manufactures the MC4-EVO, an updated design with improved locking and a slimmer profile, and the MC4 Evo 2.5, designed for 2.5mm² cable.
Stäubli's position: Stäubli does not recommend mating their connectors with third-party MC4-compatible connectors, citing potential differences in contact geometry and locking mechanism that could affect long-term reliability.
Amphenol (H4 Connector)
Amphenol manufactures the H4 UTX connector, which is one of the most widely used MC4-compatible connectors globally. The H4 is IEC 62852 certified and is used by major solar panel manufacturers including SunPower, First Solar, and many Chinese panel makers.
The H4 connector is available in versions for 2.5mm², 4mm², and 6mm² cable. Amphenol publishes compatibility data for the H4 with other MC4-compatible connectors.
TE Connectivity (Solarlok)
TE Connectivity manufactures the Solarlok connector, an MC4-compatible design used by several panel manufacturers. The Solarlok has a distinctive locking mechanism and is available in standard and IP68 variants.
Lumberg (SOLARLINE)
Lumberg (now part of Belden) manufactures the SOLARLINE connector series, which is MC4-compatible and widely used in European installations.
Chinese Manufacturers (OEM/Generic)
A large number of Chinese manufacturers produce MC4-compatible connectors, ranging from high-quality IEC 62852-certified products to low-quality uncertified copies. Major Chinese manufacturers include:
- Renhe (RH): One of the largest Chinese MC4 manufacturers, with IEC 62852 certification
- Lapp Solar: German brand, manufactured in China
- CZT: IEC 62852 certified MC4 connectors for residential and commercial PV

The Compatibility Problem
The most important — and most misunderstood — aspect of MC4 connectors is cross-manufacturer compatibility.
Because IEC 62852 does not specify exact housing dimensions, connectors from different manufacturers may physically mate (the plug fits into the socket) but not meet the standard's performance requirements when mated together. Specifically:
- Contact resistance: Mismatched contacts may have higher resistance than specified, causing heating at the connection point
- Locking force: The locking mechanism may not engage fully, allowing the connector to pull apart under tension
- IP rating: The seal may not achieve IP67 when connectors from different manufacturers are mated
What the Standards Say
IEC 62852 requires that connectors be tested as matched pairs (same manufacturer, same model). Cross-manufacturer mating is not covered by the standard.
NEC 2017 (Article 690.33) in the United States requires that PV connectors be "listed and identified for the use." This has been interpreted by some AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) to mean that mixing connector brands is not permitted.
IEC TS 62548 (PV array design) recommends using connectors from the same manufacturer throughout an installation.
Practical Reality
In practice, many installations mix MC4-compatible connectors from different manufacturers — particularly when extending or repairing existing systems. The risk level depends on:
- Quality of both connectors: Two IEC 62852-certified connectors from reputable manufacturers are lower risk than mixing certified with uncertified
- Voltage and current levels: Higher voltage/current systems have less tolerance for increased contact resistance
- Environmental conditions: Hot, humid environments accelerate degradation of mismatched connections
The safest approach is to use the same manufacturer's connectors throughout an installation. When mixing is unavoidable, use only IEC 62852-certified connectors from reputable manufacturers and inspect the mated connection for proper locking and sealing.

MC4 vs MC4-Compatible: What's the Difference?
"MC4" technically refers to Stäubli's trademarked product. "MC4-compatible" refers to connectors from other manufacturers that use the same form factor and are designed to mate with MC4 connectors.
The key distinction:
- Stäubli MC4: The original, highest quality, most expensive
- MC4-compatible (certified): IEC 62852 certified, from reputable manufacturers (Amphenol H4, Lumberg, etc.) — suitable for most installations
- MC4-compatible (uncertified): Unknown quality, not recommended for permanent installations
For utility-scale projects, Stäubli or Amphenol H4 are typically specified. For residential and commercial projects, IEC 62852-certified connectors from any reputable manufacturer are acceptable.
Other Solar Connector Types
While MC4 dominates the market, other connector types exist:
Tyco Solarlok (TE Connectivity)
The original Solarlok connector predates MC4's dominance. It is still used on some older panels and in some European markets. Solarlok is not compatible with MC4.
Anderson SB Series
Anderson Power Products' SB connectors are used in some off-grid and battery storage applications. They are not designed for outdoor string wiring but are common in battery interconnects and DC distribution.
Radox Solar (Huber+Suhner)
Radox connectors are used in some high-performance and building-integrated PV (BIPV) applications. They are not MC4-compatible.
Proprietary Panel Connectors
Some panel manufacturers use proprietary connectors on their panels. These typically come with pigtail leads that terminate in standard MC4 connectors, so the installer only sees MC4 at the string level.
Selecting Solar Connectors for Your Project
Residential rooftop (< 10 kW): IEC 62852-certified MC4-compatible connectors from any reputable manufacturer. Match the connector to the panel's factory-installed connector for the first connection.
Commercial rooftop (10–1,000 kW): IEC 62852-certified connectors, preferably from a single manufacturer throughout. Amphenol H4 or Stäubli MC4 are common specifications.
Utility-scale (> 1 MW): Stäubli MC4 or Amphenol H4 are typically specified. Consistency across the entire installation is critical for long-term reliability and maintenance.
High-voltage systems (1,500V DC): Verify that connectors are rated for 1,500V DC. Not all MC4-compatible connectors are rated above 1,000V.
Harsh environments (coastal, desert, high humidity): Specify IP68-rated connectors. Stäubli MC4 and some Amphenol H4 variants are IP68 rated.

Installation Best Practices
-
Use the correct crimping tool: MC4 connectors require a dedicated crimping tool. Using pliers or incorrect tools results in poor crimps that fail over time.
-
Match cable size to connector: Use the connector variant designed for your cable cross-section (2.5, 4, or 6mm²). Undersized cable in an oversized connector creates a poor crimp.
-
Inspect before mating: Check that the contact is fully seated in the housing before mating. A partially seated contact will have high resistance.
-
Verify locking: After mating, pull gently on both sides to confirm the locking mechanism has engaged.
-
Protect unmated connectors: Use the supplied dust caps on unmated connectors to maintain IP rating and prevent contamination.
-
Never disconnect under load: MC4 connectors are not rated for load-break switching. Always disconnect the string from the inverter before disconnecting MC4 connectors.
Summary
The solar connector market is dominated by MC4 and MC4-compatible connectors, but "MC4" covers a wide range of quality levels. For reliable, long-term installations:
- Use IEC 62852-certified connectors from reputable manufacturers
- Maintain consistency — use the same manufacturer's connectors throughout
- Avoid mixing certified and uncertified connectors
- For utility-scale projects, specify Stäubli MC4 or Amphenol H4
- Always use the correct crimping tool and verify proper installation
