An RJ45 integrated magnetics connector should be matched to the Ethernet PHY circuit before its footprint is released. A matching enclosure opening and advertised link speed are useful starting filters, but the internal transformer, center taps and termination arrangement determine whether the candidate belongs in that circuit.
The practical output is a signed circuit comparison, with each difference resolved by the responsible engineer. The CZT integrated magnetics family provides a place to organize candidates while that comparison is being completed.
Start from the exact PHY implementation
Identify the PHY part number, silicon revision where relevant, supported operating modes and the reference schematic being used. A schematic copied from another board can conceal a different transmitter architecture or center-tap requirement. Record which recommendations are mandatory and which are examples that the PHY vendor permits designers to change.
Draw the signal path from each PHY differential pair through the transformer to the corresponding cable contacts. Include center taps, common-mode chokes, termination components and shield connections. Keeping these elements on one review sheet makes reversed drawings and missing nodes easier to notice.

Compare the internal circuit, not just pin numbers
A footprint-compatible replacement may connect the same PCB positions to different internal functions. Check the winding ratio and its stated direction, pair assignment, available center taps and isolation boundary. Then compare the supporting electrical requirements over the frequency and temperature conditions relevant to the PHY.
| Review item | Record from PHY design | Record from ICM drawing |
|---|---|---|
| Signal pairs | Names and polarity | Winding and cable-contact mapping |
| Center taps | Bias or termination requirement | Accessible nodes and internal ties |
| Magnetics | Required ratio and circuit arrangement | Ratio direction and choke position |
| Board interface | Footprint and keepouts | Pins, shield tabs and datum view |
Treat a blank cell as an unresolved engineering task rather than an assumption that the devices are interchangeable.
Separate circuit approval from board approval
An acceptable transformer circuit does not approve the PCB layout. Review pair routing, reference structures, proximity to switching nodes and the mechanical interface independently. Conversely, an attractive layout cannot correct an unsuitable internal magnetic circuit.
For a hypothetical gateway redesign, the first candidate might match the mounting holes but tie together nodes that the approved PHY design keeps separate. That candidate requires a documented circuit decision before any layout reuse. The example is a decision pattern, not a test result for a CZT model.

Release a reviewable selection record
Attach the PHY reference design, the candidate drawing revision, a marked-up net mapping and the unresolved-issue list to the sample request. Define the next verification steps, including link operation on the actual board and the environmental conditions the product needs.
The final selection record should state who approved the circuit and which board configuration was evaluated. This allows purchasing to order the reviewed configuration rather than relying on a short family name that may cover several internal variants.

A catalog drawing reference is a starting document, not a substitute for reviewing its revision, options and suitability for the complete assembly.

Discuss a drawing, sample or quotation
Share the part or family reference, current drawing revision, operating conditions and quantities. Include the specific checks described in this article so the inquiry identifies both the component and the evidence needed for your decision. Confirm sample availability and the proposed scope with the supplier.
